# Phone numbers tab

### **Introduction**

The **Phone numbers** tab displays all phone numbers connected to your Distance account. Connected numbers can be assigned to AI Voice agents for inbound calls and AI Chat agents for SMS conversations, allowing customers to communicate with your business through a single number.

Phone numbers are also used for outbound SMS campaigns and automations, helping your team manage voice and messaging communications from one place.

Connected phone numbers are displayed in a list with their current status and configuration.

If no number has been added yet, you will see the **Connect a business number** button. Click this to start the process of adding and verifying a new phone number for your account.

Once a number is connected, it can be used for:

* Receiving inbound calls through an AI Voice agent
* Sending and receiving SMS messages through an AI Chat agent
* Allowing team members to take over SMS conversations and respond directly to customers
* Sending SMS campaigns
* Sending SMS messages through automations
* Handling replies to campaign and automation messages through the AI Chat agent

Proper setup ensures your phone numbers are ready for both automated and human-assisted communication across voice and SMS channels within Distance.
